Kingdom Warnings (Mark 9:38-50)
In Mark 9:38–50, the disciples are concerned about who may work in the name of Jesus, but Jesus turns their attention to the serious consequences of sin. He warns them not to hinder those whom God is using and not to cause the little ones who believe in Him to stumble.
This sermon considers the believer’s relationship to others and the eternal seriousness of sin. Jesus’ words about cutting off the hand, foot, or eye are shocking because they are meant to awaken us to the danger of sin and the reality of hell. Nothing in this world is worth forfeiting heaven and facing the wrath of God.
The warning is both outward and inward: do not cause another to stumble, and do not let anything cause you to stumble. God’s people are called to guard their testimony, mortify sin, and live as salt in the world.
