God does not assure His people by pretending that sin is harmless or by directing them to their own worthiness. The apostle John confronts the believer’s sin honestly and points to Jesus Christ the righteous, our advocate and propitiation. Christ does not deny our guilt or search for a legal loophole. By His once-for-all sacrifice, He bears our guilt, satisfies the righteous wrath of God, and secures our forgiveness.
Abide in the Light explains the biblical doctrines of Christ’s advocacy, propitiation, imputed righteousness, obedience, and sanctification. Salvation is received through grace alone and does not depend on personal effort. Yet the grace that saves also transforms the believer’s relationship to righteousness. Obedience cannot earn salvation, but it does testify to the new life Christ gives.
These truths provide comfort for believers whose struggle with remaining sin causes them to doubt, while also warning those whose profession of faith is unaccompanied by obedience or transformation. Biblical assurance rests in Christ’s finished work and is confirmed by His continuing work of sanctification.
