Entering the Kingdom (Matthew 18:1-4)

In Matthew 18:1–4, the disciples come to Jesus asking who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Their question reveals a concern for rank, status, and position. Jesus answers by placing a child before them and teaching that unless they turn and become like children, they will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

This sermon considers the danger of asking the wrong question. The disciples were concerned with greatness in the kingdom, but Jesus pressed them to consider entrance into the kingdom. The issue was not their future rank, but whether they had truly humbled themselves before God.

The way into the kingdom is repentance. Jesus calls sinners to turn from pride, self-righteousness, and worldly ambition, and to come to Him in humility. Kingdom greatness begins with salvation, and salvation comes only through humble repentance and faith in Christ.
