John the Evangelist describes the ministry of John the Baptist and his testimony concerning Jesus. When pressed by priests, Levites, and Pharisees about his identity, John the Baptist deflected all attention from himself to point to the One they should be seeking. The next day, seeing Jesus approach, he proclaimed the most powerful one-sentence sermon ever preached: "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" This sermon unfolds two essential truths about who Jesus is:

Jesus is the Lamb of God (vv. 19-34). This section explores John the Baptist's interrogation by Jerusalem's religious leaders and his emphatic refusal to accept any messianic title for himself. The sermon examines how John drew the crowd's attention with the urgent cry "Behold!"—a prompter demanding that no one miss the arrival of the promised Messiah. It traces the biblical theme of sacrifice from Adam and Eve through Moses's law, demonstrating that earthly offerings could never satisfy sin's demands permanently. Jesus is not merely a lamb but the Lamb of God—God Himself offering Himself for the redemption of sinful man.

Jesus takes away your sin (v. 29b; 3:34-36). The sermon confronts the reality that Jesus came in the flesh not simply to experience human suffering but to deal decisively with human sin. This section addresses the greatest need of every person—forgiveness—and explains how Jesus's sacrifice is both sufficient for all and effectual for those who believe. Drawing from John 3:35-36, it demonstrates that while the world remains under God's wrath on account of sin, whoever believes in the Son receives eternal life. The conclusion features a powerful illustration from Charles Spurgeon's ministry at the Crystal Palace, where God used the declaration of John 1:29 to bring salvation to an unsuspecting workman.
