John the evangelist continues his gospel prologue by declaring the most wonderful words ever spoken: "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." This sermon unfolds three essential elements of salvation that depend on the Word becoming flesh:
The Word became flesh to reveal God's glory (vv. 14-15).
The sermon explores how Jesus's incarnation reveals the glory of God through His presence and truth. This section examines how the eternal God came in the flesh to dwell with sinful man, making the invisible God visible. It addresses how familiarity with the Christmas story can breed contempt and challenges believers to behold afresh the radiant beauty of God's glory in Christ.
The Word became flesh to show God's grace (vv. 16-17).
This section reveals how Jesus fulfills the law and transforms sinners to righteousness. The manuscript demonstrates how Christ became the once-for-all sacrifice for sin, satisfying the law's demands that could never be met through repeated sacrifices. It unpacks God's eternal redemptive plan and traces the progression from innocence before the fall, through inability to not sin, to the new creation's ability to not sin, and finally to the glorified state of being unable to sin.
The Word became flesh to provide salvation (v. 18).
The sermon concludes with the profound declaration that through Jesus, we can know God and be at peace with God. This section explores how Jesus makes the Father known and how His atoning work satisfies God's holy wrath. It powerfully demonstrates that only through the incarnation—God in the flesh—could sinners be reconciled to God and given eternal peace.
