Redeemed (Ruth 4:1–12)

Ruth and Naomi have waited for Boaz to act. At the city gate, he presents their situation to the relative with the first right of redemption. When that man declines, Boaz publicly commits himself to redeem the family property and take Ruth as his wife. What had been uncertain is now settled before witnesses.

In Ruth 4:1–12, redemption carries a cost. Boaz accepts a responsibility the other relative will not take, and the people of Bethlehem bless his faithfulness. His actions point to a greater Redeemer: Jesus Christ willingly gave His life to save sinners who could never pay the cost of their own redemption.

Because Christ has paid that price, those who belong to Him do not have to earn or maintain their salvation by their own efforts. We can rejoice in His finished work and celebrate the faithfulness and obedience His grace produces in His people.
