Living Righteously in an Unrighteous World (Psalm 5)
Psalm 5 is a morning psalm in which David begins his day before the Lord in prayer. As he prays, he contrasts the glory and holiness of God with the wickedness of the world around him. The righteous are welcomed into God’s presence by His mercy, while the wicked stand under His righteous judgment.
This sermon considers two major themes in Psalm 5: standing in His presence and living under His shelter. David knows that God hears the prayers of His people, but he also recognizes that God takes no pleasure in wickedness. The privilege of prayer is not grounded in David’s goodness, but in God’s abundant lovingkindness.
Psalm 5 calls believers to live righteously in an unrighteous world. We must not envy the world, emulate the world, or join the world in rebellion. Instead, we are to seek God’s righteousness, trust His judgment, and rejoice that the Lord surrounds His people with favor as with a shield.
