Call On The Name Of The Lord, Genesis 4:25-5:32

Cal on The Name of the Lord (Genesis 4:25-5:32)

**Note: During this sermon, I misspoke and stated that nine people entered the ark. There were nine generations from Adam to Noah, but only eight people—Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives—were saved on the ark (Genesis 7:13).

In Call on the Name of the Lord (Genesis 4:25–5:32), Pastor Ben Smith explores how God works faithfully in the midst of widespread rebellion. As Scripture contrasts the flourishing but godless line of Cain with the quiet faithfulness of Seth’s descendants, we see that God’s redemptive plan is never threatened by human sin or cultural opposition. Though the faithful were few, the Lord preserved a remnant who called on His name and carried forward His promises from Adam through Noah.

This message encourages believers living in discouraging times by reminding us that God sovereignly preserves His will, knows each of His people, and keeps His word in every generation. Popularity, numbers, and cultural influence are poor measures of faithfulness—but God’s promises endure. Just as in the days of Adam, Seth, and Noah, God still knows whose are His and continues His redemptive work through those who call upon His name today.

In a world where rebellion seems to multiply and faithfulness feels increasingly rare, Genesis 4–5 offers a steadying word of hope: God has never depended on the crowds to accomplish His purposes. He preserves a remnant, knows His people by name, and faithfully advances His redemptive plan.

Call On the Name of the Lord is a full expository sermon manuscript that walks through Genesis 4:25–5:32, contrasting the way of Cain with the faithful line of Seth. While Cain’s descendants boast cultural achievement and numerical growth, Seth’s line is marked by something far more enduring—they call upon the name of the Lord. This sermon encourages believers living in discouraging days by anchoring their hope in God’s sovereignty, promise-keeping, and intimate knowledge of His people.

Drawing connections from the antediluvian world to later moments in church history—and ultimately to the present—the sermon reminds readers that God’s work is never threatened by widespread unbelief. From Adam to Noah, from underground churches to today, God has always preserved His own.
