The perfect way to eat an Oreo

This one is a bit random.

I really like double stuffed Oreos. For many years I enjoyed Oreos and milk before I went to bed every night. Over the years, I perfected the best way to eat Oreos, and I thought I would share it with you today.

First, you will need to gather ingredients and materials. Here is what you will need:

Oreo cookies
  • 1 glass cup (16oz)

  • Whole milk

  • 4 or 5 Double Stuffed Oreos

Once you have gathered all the ingredients and materials, follow these instructions for the perfect Oreo eating experience.

Place the empty glass cup in the freezer for several hours before enjoying the Oreos. I generally put it in the freezer the night before. Just before eating the Oreos, remove the 16oz glass from the freezer and fill it to the brim with whole milk. Then take one Double Stuffed Oreo and place it in between your thumb and pointer finger with the cookie part parallel with your body. With your thumb and pointer finger pinching the Oreo towards the top edge of the cookie, lower the cookie into the milk until your fingers just touch the milk. Release the cookie but keep your fingers in the pinch position so that the cookie floats in the milk between your fingers. The cookie will float for just a moment, then as the cookie becomes saturated with milk, it will begin to sink (generally between 2-3 seconds). Just as the cookie begins to sink, use your thumb and pointer finger to gently pinch the cookie and raise it from the milk. This process will have achieved the perfect ratio of cookie/milk saturation. Now enjoy the cookie and repeat the process for the remaining cookies.

You can find some very in-depth studies on how long to dunk an Oreo. Mental Floss, wrote an article on the history and results of studying the optimal dunking time and reported that the optimal time was between 3.5 to 4 seconds. My method archives this perfect time without having to use a stopwatch.

As you are dunking the cookies and perfecting the saturation technique, you may find that sometimes chunks of the cookie may break off and remain in the milk. Do not be concerned if this happens, as it will only make the last step all the better. Once all the cookies are gone the milk will be well seasoned with cookie dust and pieces of cookie. Enjoy the remaining Oreo-flavored milk to wash it all down.

And that, my friends, is the perfect way to eat an Oreo.
